Woman in a blue dress running with night sky background

A Night Like This

By Julia Quinn

Dates Read

Oct 26 - Nov 1st

Listened through Hoopla

9hrs 37min

Favorite Character:

Lady Pleinsworth

Because she was on Anne's side. and she not so subtly pointed out to our MMC that he was taking advantage of their class difference.

Blurb:

Anne Wynter might not be who she says she is...

But she's managing quite well as a governess to three highborn young ladies. Her job can be a challenge—in a single week she finds herself hiding in a closet full of tubas, playing an evil queen in a play that might be a tragedy (or might be a comedy—no one is sure), and tending to the wounds of the oh-so-dashing Earl of Winstead. After years of dodging unwanted advances, he's the first man who has truly tempted her, and it's getting harder and harder to remind herself that a governess has no business flirting with a nobleman.

Daniel Smythe-Smith Might be in mortal danger...

But that's not going to stop the young earl from falling in love. And when he spies a mysterious woman at his family's annual musicale, he vows to pursue her, even if that means spending his days with a ten-year-old who thinks she's a unicorn. But Daniel has an enemy, one who has vowed to see him dead. And when Anne is thrown into peril, he will stop at nothing to ensure their happy ending...

Thoughts:

It suffered from the trope I hate the most. When someone can't be honest with another person. It also had class difference which I really do not like when the MMC takes advantage of that. It did make up for it with a lovely action packed happily ever after.

Woman in a yellow dress with red shoes author and book title in front

Just Like Heaven

By Julia Quinn

Dates Read

Oct 25-26, 2024

Favorite Character:

Lady Danbury

Of course she was in this one and as always she has an abundance of wit and sarcasm.

Favorite quote:

If anyone were to see her as a wet, bedraggled creature of the rodential variety it would be he.

Blurb:

Honoria Smythe-Smith is:

A) a really bad violinist

B) still miffed at being nicknamed "Bug" as a child

C) not in love with her older brother's best friend

D) all of the above

Marcus Holroyd is:

A) the Earl of Chatteris

B) regrettably prone to sprained ankles

C) not in love with his best friend's younger sister

D) all of the above

Together they:

A) eat quite a bit of chocolate cake

B) survive a deadly fever and the world's worst musical performance

C) fall quite desperately in love

It's Julia Quinn at her best, so you know the answer is . . .

D) all of the above

Thoughts:

It was a cute story. My favorite part was when Honoria tried to fake a sprained ankle and Marcus ended up being the one injured. And the entire nurse patient story played out well. I loved the reappearance of Lady Danbury and Honoria got to dance with Colin Bridgerton. (This takes place in 1824 and he gets married in 1824, and he has an injured arm.) I love how we see previous characters but are being told a completely different story.

Skull with roses and butterfly

Haunting Adeline

By H.D. Carlton

Dates Read

Oct 12 - Oct 17

Favorite Character:

Daya and Jay

The down to Earth best friends, of each respective character, I love them. I wish them all the happiness

Read in E-Book Format

Blurb:

The Manipulator

I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me.

I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh.

But my words don't affect him.

Especially not when I plead for him to leave.

He's always there, watching and waiting.

And I can never look away.

Not when I want him to come closer.

The Shadow

I didn't mean to fall in love.

But now that I have, I can't stay away.

I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves.

The way she undresses...

I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine.

And once she is, I'll never let her go.

Not even when she begs me to.

Thoughts:

I will preface this by saying, I don't normally have triggers. So I didn't really have a problem with this book. I enjoyed it. Everything except that cliffhanger ending.
