Naked womans back

Sapho's Leap

By Erica Jong

Dates Read

Oct 6 - 8

2024

Listened through Hoopla

Blurb:

Sappho's Leap is a journey back 2,600 years to inhabit the mind of the greatest love poet the world has ever known. At the age of fourteen, Sappho is seduced by the beautiful poet Alcaeus, plots with him to overthrow the dictator of their island, and is caught and married off to a repellent older man in hopes that matrimony will keep her out of trouble. Instead, it starts her off on a series of amorous adventures with both men and women, taking her from Delphi to Egypt, and even to the Land of the Amazons and the shadowy realm of Hades.

Thoughts:

I did not like this one, one star. Anyone who knows me know that it takes a lot to make me one star a book. The dialogue was awkward, and I did not feel the chemistry between any of the characters. I did like the mythical side of it. The main issue I take with it was the use of children by the main character.

Black Beauty

By Anna Sewell

Listened through Audible

5hrs 21min

Blurb:

As a young horse, Black Beauty is well-loved and happy. But when his owner is forced to sell him, his life changes drastically. He has many new owners—some of them cruel and some of them kind. All he needs is someone to love him again....

Whether pulling an elegant carriage or a ramshackle cab, Black Beauty tries to live as best he can. This is his amazing story, told as only he could tell it.

Thoughts:

It was an interesting and thought provoking piece of work. Seeing the difference between wealthy and poor through the eyes of an animal was interesting. I listened to the graphic audio which always adds a bit of extra to the traditional story.

Listened through Libro

7hr 47min

Blurb:

How the monarchs of England and Scotland met their deaths has been a shocking mixture of violence, infections, overindulgence, and occasional regicide. In Mortal Monarchs, medical historian Dr. Suzie Edge examines 1,000 years of royal deaths to uncover the plots, accusations, rivalries, and ever-present threat of poison that the kings and queens of old faced.

Thoughts:

I follow Dr. Edge on tik tok so many of the stories I had actually heard already but it was fun to listen to her read her book. and interesting to hear a modern medical professional's view on the way historical figures passed on.
